We have been asked to pass on the following message:

We have received a number of reports regarding phishing emails impersonating the General Medical Council (GMC) and targeting doctors.

Reports have been submitted via the Contact Centre, as well as through sample emails that have been forwarded to us. As a result, we only have visibility of the sending email address and the email content, and do not have access to full original message headers.

The emails spoof displays the sender’s name as “General Medical Council” but are being sent from the following email address:

gmc.memberships@gmail.com

Example characteristics

Recipients report emails with subjects similar to:

  • URGENT: Confirmation of £100/3-Year Fixed Rate Registration

The message content typically:

  • Claims to reference a Department of Health initiative
  • Offers a 3-year GMC registration and licence to practise for £100
  • Creates urgency by stating limited availability
  • Requests recipients to reply directly with:
    • Full name
    • GMC reference number
