LPA digital service
People who have a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) often bring a document to the surgery so a copy can be retained on their medical records.
As an alternative to this, surgeries may now receive a unique 13-digit access code from either the attorney or the donor. This code enables practices to securely verify the LPA using the official View an LPA service provided by GOV.UK. Full guidance is available here: Using the View an LPA service – GOV.UK
If practices are provided with a code, we recommend that it is used as soon as it is received to verify the LPA and download a summary for inclusion in the patient’s record. This ensures that key information is readily available in case of an emergency. The access code should be retained within the record so that, if the LPA needs to be referenced in the future, practices can easily check for any updates or changes.
Practices may also wish to advise patients to notify them of any changes to the LPA so the most up-to-date version can be downloaded and stored.
